BBQ Friday Five

We've got a rare night where everybody is going to be home. I'm making dinner-- bbq beef ribs and chicken, potato salad, broccoli/tomato salad, coleslaw and of course, for my son, rice. Later, we'll probably play "Settlers of Cataan" and maybe some Rock Band.

1. Oh Boy- Buddy Holly
2. Wanted Man- Johnny Cash
3. Turd On The Run- The Rolling Stones
4. Thrasher- Neil Young
5. Guess Things Happen That Way- Johnny Cash

Notes:
1. Buddy Holly has grown on me over the years.
2. The Man In Black covering Bob Dylan
3. From the greatest rock and roll album ever, "Exile On Main Street."
4. Some science fiction from Neil.
5. I was watching a documentary on Johnny Cash a week or so ago and learned that the the mariachi horns on "Ring of Fire" came to Mr. Cash in a dream.

Somewhere around 1978 I attended a Neil Young "Rust Never Sleeps" tour concert in Bakersfield Ca. (I think). It was one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
As luck would have it, about 10 years ago I ran across a "bootleg" album recorded at that very concert. I was so happy!
Oh yeah, I want to come over for dinner!

It sounds like a pretty perfect Friday night. Hope you got some Rock Banding in!

This is the story of Johnny Rotten . . . Saw Neil Y on Charlie Rose -- very strangely cool, even my Dad was drawn in on electric cars . . . Saw him in the early 80s, very intensely weird, as is Bob Dylan . . . and a big yes on Exile! Three cheers to the Man in Black, too!

Hey you!!

I've sure missed the blog circuit. I'm trying to make my way back. I've let my job, which I love, swallow me up whole.

Like your new digs, too!

Pat-
I remember going to see the movie and loving it. I was puzzled since by the fact that it's consistently listed in lists of "worst rock movies ever." Completely disagree.

Oh, and you've got a standing invitation for dinner!

Barbara-
Thanks! We did get some rock banding in. I killed singing on Bowie's "Moonage Daydream!"

Erik-
Love Neil's early stuff, and he kicks out a brilliant album every 5 years or so. Still haven't seen him in concert yet.

Have you heard any of the outtakes from the rerelease of "Exile?" My general feeling is that the Stones made the right decision in keeping them out in the first place-- not nearly as strong as the songs that made it into the final mix.

Churlita-
I grew to love Buddy Holly when I was 19 and living for a few months in Salt Lake City. One of my roommates had a "Best of Buddy Holly" album that I played to death.

Bubbles-
Glad to see you back! You've been missed. Glad the job is going well. I want to read more about it!
